Francis “Nipper” Harrigan

Served on Bunker Hill Parade Committee; member of American Legion and Old Charlestown School Boys Association

Francis W. “Nipper” Harrigan of Charlestown died on October 22.

A US Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of the old Charlestown School Boys Association, American Legion post 26 and served on the Bunker Hill Parade Committee.

The loving father of Kathleen F. Gouthro of Charlestown, Maureen Sullivan of Bellingham, Maragaret Kozlowski and Francis W Harrigan III, both of Melrose , he was the brother of John Harrigan of Atkinson, NH and is also survived by six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Margaret ‘Peg’ Canney

Lifelong Townie, Dedicated Parishioner of St. Francis de Sales Church

Margaret T., “Peg” ( Ducey) Canney of Charlestown died on December 29 after a brief illness in the Mass. General Hospital surrounded by her family.

Peg was a life long townie and a dedicated parishioner at St Francis de Sales Church, working in the choir, setting the altars and helping with cleaning the church and rectory. She attended the St. Francis de Sales School and the Rosary Academy, Watertown.

The beloved wife of the late Sergent Detective Walter L. Canney, she was the daughter of the late Leo Sr., and Mary (Hickey) Ducey; loving mother of Joseph L. Canney, B.P.D., and his wife, Cathleen of Medford, Paul L. Canney and his wife, Cathy of Natick, Mary E. Canney – Zingg of Westwood and Barbara Klepinger and her husband, James of Pennsylvania; loving sister of Helen Reilly of Stoneham, Mel Fitzgerald of Woburn and the late Kay Lynch, May Sullivan, Dottie Monaco, Leo “Bud” Ducey, Jr. and William Ducey, SSJC.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by the Murphy & Turnbull Funeral Home, Charlestown.

Walter Troy

Longtime Owner of Troy Insurance Agency

Walter F. Troy, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed away on Friday, January 3. He was 74 years old.

Walter graduated with the Class of 1958 from Charlestown High School. He then proudly went on to join the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962 and was stationed in Iwakuni, Philippines. Following his honorable discharge as a Corporal from the Marine Corps, he attended Northeastern University, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

He was the owner of the Walter F. Troy Insurance Agency on Main Street in Charlestown for over 30 years.Walter was a member of the American Legion Post 26, the Somerville City Club and a proud supporter of the Lt. Michael P. Quinn Scholarship Fund.
He was a loving and caring person who was devoted to caring for his family. He enjoyed photography and drawing and traveled the world extensively. He especially loved to visit family in Ireland. He loved a good argument, especially when he knew he was right. Walter was cherished by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

He was the beloved son of the late Nicholas and Julia (Gallagher) Troy and the beloved brother of the late Edward T. Troy and Nicholas F. Troy; cherished uncle of Edward F. Troy and his wife, Kelly and great uncle of Joseph E. Troy, all of Mansfield.
Walter’s funeral service will be held today, Thursday, January 9 at 9:10 a.m. from the John H. Sawyer Funeral Home, 329 Bunker Hill St., Charlestown followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. Collation will follow at the Mount Vernon Restaurant, 14 Broadway, Somerville. All are invited to attend.

Sally Flanagan

Loving, Thoughtful and Spirited Person

Sally (Leahy) Flanagan of Port Orange Florida, died on January 6.

Sally was a loving, thoughtful and spirited person with a spectacular singing voice.

Born in Somerville and formerly of Hull,

she was the beloved daughter of Mary H. “Marie” (Maguire) Leahy and was predeceased by her father Edward F. Leahy. She was the loving sister of Edward F. Jr. and his wife, Eileen of Connecticut, Robert M. and his wife, Lourdes of New York, Paul G. and his wife, Rose of Connecticut, Mark J. and his wife, Alicia of Pennsylvania, Peter C. and his wife, Kristine of Connecticut, Timothy D. and his wife, Maria of Charlestown and Thomas A. and his wife, Barbara of Pennsylvania; loving aunt to six nieces and 16 nephews; loving cousin to John T. “Johnnie” Leahy who provided selfless love and care for Sally during her prolonged illness.

Her Funeral will be held from the Murphy & Turnbull Funeral Home, 322 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown, Saturday, January 11 at 9:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m.

Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours will be Friday, January 10 from 4 to 8 p.m.

Interment will be private

Of Peabody, Formerly of Charlestown

Helen F. (Keigney) Emberley of Peabody, formerly of Charlestown, died on December 29 after a long illness with her husband of 57 years, William F. Emberley, by her side.

Helen, who attended the St. Mary and Edwards Middle Schools in Charlestown, was the beloved daughter of the late John and Helen (Connolly) Keigney; loving sister of Rita Kelley of Medford and Michael Keigney of Charlestown.

Michael Elwell

Truck Driver and Lifelong Charlestown Resident

Michael P. Elwell, a lifelong Charlestown resident, entered eternal life suddenly on Sunday, January 12. He was 48 years old.

Born in Boston on January 1, 1966, a son of Edward J. Elwell and Ann M. (Power) Elwell, he grew up in Charlestown. He was educated at St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and graduated from Don Bosco High School in Boston in 1984. Mike, who worked as a truck driver for several trucking companies, was a devoted friend of Bill W.

Michael was the beloved father of Meghan and Stephen; the loving son of Ann M. (Power) Elwell and the late Edward J. Elwell; the devoted brother of Edward G. Elwell and his wife, Patricia, Dennis P. Elwell and the late Stephen J. Elwell and the loving uncle to Conor, Katie and Cullen. James Sadler

Worked in Construction and Fire Equipment Manufacture

James E. Sadler of 60 Washington St., Somerville passed away on January 12, 2012. He was 82 years old.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 17, 1931, he was raised in a family of six boys and one girl by his father, Raymond and his mother, Viola Owens Sadler.

He enlisted and served in the National Guard from 1949 to April 23, 1952 and then entered the US Army on April 24, 1952. He served overseas in Italy and was honorably discharged as Corporal on April 29, 1960. He was employed in the construction business and also in the manufacture of fire equipment for the Fire Department.

Mr. Sadler leaves behind two surviving brothers, Carroll Roger Sadler of Delaware and Robert Sadler and his wife, Sandy of Elmore, Ohio. He will be sadly missed and was tremendously loved by his many friends and relatives, notably Tena and George McNeil and their son, Stefan of Alton, NH and his dear friend Sally Klessens and her family of Somerville.

He will be interred at the Bourne Veterans Cemetery after cremation. A Memorial Mass will be said at St. Ann Church on February 8 at 4 p.m. to commemorate and celebrate his life. May he rest in eternal peace until we meet again. God rest his soul.

Lillian Eldredge

Of Billerica, formerly of Charlestown

Lillian G. Eldredge of Billerica died Friday, January 17 at Lowell General Hospital. She was 83 years old.

Born in Charlestown, she was a daughter of the late Paul N. and Lillian G. (Crogan) Eldredge. She was raised in Charlestown and resided in Florida for a number of years before moving to Billerica. She was a federal employee at Hanscom Air Force Base in Bedford and enjoyed playing bingo and going to movies.

She is survived by two brothers: Frank Eldredge of Colorado and Paul Eldredge of Quincy. She was the sister of the late Rosemary Buckley and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements are in the care of the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, Woonsocket, RI. Burial will be at a later date in Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham. Visiting hours and flowers are omitted.

Florence Johnson

Gold Star Mother, Active in Many Organizations, ‘Mayor’ of Charlestown;

First Woman Chief Marshall of the Bunker Hill Day Parade

Florence L. (Ineson) Johnson, (Gold Star Mother and United States Navy Veteran of World War II), a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Monday, March 10 at her home in Charlestown following a brief illness. She was 90 years old.

Florence was born in Weare, New Hampshire on August 20, 1923, a daughter of the late Charles E. (Ineson) and Jessie (Dean) Ineson. She grew up in Charlestown. She was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1942. She enlisted into the US Navy (Waves) on April 15, 1944 and served her country with pride and courage during World War II. She was discharged on September 26, 1945 with the rank of Seaman First Class. Florence worked for the Boston Public School system for over 10 years as a Teachers Aide at the Kent School in Charlestown.

In 1967, Florence and her husband received the unbearable news from the United States Marine Corps that their son Teddy had been killed in action in the Republic of Vietnam. From that day forward, Florence has been a vocal advocate for all Gold Star Mothers in the United States of America and supporter of the many veterans organizations and veterans affairs throughout Massachusetts and the New England area. In 2003, Florence was able to travel to the Republic of Vietnam along with her son Teddy’s platoon sergeant and actually visit the sight where her son was killed in action.

Florence was past President of The Massachusetts and Rhode Island Gold Star Mothers, a member of Abraham Lincoln Post # 11 G.A.R. of Charlestown, Past Commander of American Legion Bunker Hill Post # 26 of Charlestown, Honor Society of Women Legion 20-4, Past President of The Charlestown Lions Club, Mayor of Charlestown from 1990 to 1991, first woman Chief Marshall of Bunker Hill Day Parade in 1986, member of The Old Charlestown Schoolgirls Association and honorary member of The Daughters of Isabella # 1 of Charlestown.

She was the beloved wife of the late Lee E. Johnson; the devoted mother of Carol Johnson-Mercuri of Charlestown, Beverly Johnson and her husband, Richard Leibowitz of Wareham, William Johnson of Charlestown and Ellen of Wilmington, Eric Johnson and his wife, Karen of Pembroke and the late Edward “Teddy” Johnson USMC, KIA 1967, Republic of Vietnam; the loving Nana Flo to Marc, Melissa, Kiva, Michael, Sheila, Daniel, Brendan, Kevin, Erin and her great-grandchildren, Charlotte, Ellie, Nicholas and Louise. She was pre-deceased by 10 siblings and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Florence’s Funeral Service on Saturday, March 15 at 10 a.m. in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 27 Devens St. Charlestown. Interment will be at Mt. Joseph Gervino

Decorated Veteran

Joseph Gervino of Charlestown died on March 6. He was 91 years old.

Joe immigrated to America from Cosenza, Italy to Charlestown when he was 14 years old. An Army Staff Sergeant and a veteran of World War II, he received a Purple Heart, Silver Star for valor in action, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, 2 Bronze Stars, Combat Infantryman Badge, American Theater Ribbon and 2 Overseas Bars.

He was the beloved husband for 62 years to Grace (Palmarazzo); loving father of Michael J. and his wife, Heidi of Salem, N.H., Rocco A. and his wife, Nancy of Hampstead, N.H. and Mary L. Gervino and her husband, Jim Keogh of Melrose and the brother of the late Michael and Ralph Gervino. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Rhonda Reeder

Lifelong Charlestown resident

Rhonda A. Reeder, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Friday, July 12 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. She was 47 years old.

Rhonda was born in Somerville on August 24, 1965, a daughter of George E. Reeder and Irene T. (McGonagle) Reeder

She grew up in Charlestown and was loved by her entire family all of her life. She was a 35 year client of The Life Focus Center in Charlestown, enjoyed listening to music, dancing and loved all the Boston sports teams.

Rhonda was the loving twin sister of Richard Reeder and his wife, Lisa and the devoted sister of George E. Reeder Jr., David L. Reeder, Irene Reeder, Mary Dacey and her husband, Michael and John Reeder. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Edward Elwell

Lifelong Charlestown Resident;

 Worked for Sears & Roebuck

Edward J. Elwell, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Monday, August 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following an extended illness. He was 76 years old.

Ed was born on Boston on January 19, 1937, a son of the late James H. Elwell and Josephine A. (McMillan) Elwell. He grew up in Charlestown and he was educated in the Boston Public School system. Ed enlisted into the US Navy on August 8, 1955 and served his country with pride and honor during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on August 14, 1957 with the rank of Machinist Mate Third Class. Ed worked for Sears & Roebuck Company as a warehouseman and was a member of Teamsters Union Local # 25 for over 45 years. He was a member of Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus and was a longtime friend of Bill W. He was a season ticket holder for the Boston Red Sox and took great enjoyment spending quality time with his family and especially his five grandchildren.

Ed is the beloved and loving husband of 51 years to Ann M. (Power) Elwell; the devoted father of Edward G. Elwell and his wife, Patricia, Michael P. Elwell, Dennis P. Elwell and the late Stephen J. Elwell; the loving Grandpa to Conor, Meghan, Katie, Cullen and Stephen; the beloved brother of James Elwell and his late wife, Doris, Nancy Walles and her husband, Billy, Betty Power and her husband, Billy and the late Barbara Elwell, Joanne Grealish and Elaine Silva. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Daniel Canney, III

Of Charlestown

Daniel E. Canney, III of Charlestown died suddenly on April 8.

He was the beloved son of Daniel E. and Margaret T. (Meehan) Canney; loving brother of Michael G. Canney of Charlestown, Catherine T. Donahue and her husband, Dana of Ohio and Mary Beth Hetherton of Winthrop; nephew of Mary Canney of Medford and Patricia Meehan of Quincy; uncle of John, Kimberly, Nicole Donahue, Jaclyn, William, and Carolyn Hetherton and is also survived by many cousins.

Anne Tiernan

IRS Retiree, Old Charlestown School Girls Association Member and Active Swimmer

Anne T. Tiernan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed away peacefully on April 28. She was 86 years old.

Anne was born on June 26, 1927 to William J. Tiernan and Sarah Winifred Walsh Tiernan who emigrated from Galway, Ireland. Her father was a World War I Army veteran who died in 1929 after serving honorably in Mexico and Europe, leaving his wife Sarah to raise five children alone through the dark years of the depression.

Anne graduated from St. Mary’s Grammer School and Charlestown High School, Class of 1945. She was a member of the Old Charlestown School Girls Association where her niece Sally Klessens serves as President. She was also an active swimmer for years with memberships to the Armed Service YMCA in Charlestown and the Holiday Inn Pool Club in Somerville.

Anne worked since middle school for over 40 years as a bookkeeper at Eddie Henry’s Variety Store on Main Street in Charlestown. She then worked at the JFK Building for the Internal Revenue Service, retiring in January of 1996 after many years of service.

She was the devoted sister of Margaret Klessens of Somerville and the late Mary Sanborn, William Tiernan and Frances Coyne; the loving aunt of Sally W. Klessens of Somerville, William F. Klessens of New Hampshire, Cornelius J. Klessens and his wife, Donna of Beverly, Thomas F. Klessens and his wife, Jean of Tyngsboro, William Sanborn and his wife, Lorraine of Saugus and Maureen O’Malley and her husband, Robert of Holliston. She is also survived by several grandnieces and grandnephews.

Anne was tremendously loved and will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by family members and friends. Eileen Lally, RN

Of Florida, formerly of Charlestown

Eileen M. (Kelly) Lally RN, a resident of Seminole, Florida for more than 25 years and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on Saturday, April 26 in Seminole, Florida. She was 58 years old.

Eileen was born in Boston on August 27, 1955, a daughter of the late Patrick J. Kelly and Gertrude “Frances” (Whitney) Kelly. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated at St. Catherine’s Parochial School in Charlestown and graduated from North Cambridge Catholic High School in Cambridge in 1973. She furthered her education and received her Nursing Degree from Somerville Hospital School of Nursing. Eileen worked as a Registered Nurse in the emergency department at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for several years before moving to Seminole, Florida and working as a Registered Nurse with home health care providers in the area for many years.

Eileen is the loving wife of Peter Lally. She is the devoted mother of Katie Lally, Brendan Lally and Kelsey Lally, all of Florida; the beloved sister of Kathleen Browne of Charlestown, John Kelly of Charlestown, Maryellen Hamilton of Dorchester, Patricia Brooks of Wakefield and Bill Kelly of Wakefield and the loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Joseph ‘Lee’ Doyle

Lifelong Charlestown Resident

Joseph L. “Lee” Doyle, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life suddenly on Thursday, June 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 56 years old.

Lee was born in Boston on May 23, 1958, a son of the late Norman Doyle and Margaret (Dozier) Doyle. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1976. Lee enlisted into the United States Army on October 2, 1975 and served his country faithfully. He was discharged on January 23, 1976. Lee worked as a carpenter for several years.

He is the beloved former husband of Shirley M. (Hamilton); the devoted father of Zara Doyle and Cory Doyle; the beloved brother of Norman Doyle and his wife, Donna, Philip Doyle and Paul Doyle and his, partner Ron.

Sidney ‘Sid’ McComiskey

Electrician

Sidney J. “Sid” McComiskey, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Monday, June 16 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. He was 60 years old.

Sid was born in Boston on December 10, 1953, a son of the late Sidney McComiskey and Helen (Ward) McComiskey. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1971. Sid worked as an electrician for many years.

Sid was the devoted father of Sidney “Sid” McComiskey II and his wife, Jennifer and William Allen and the loving grandfather to Liam; the beloved brother of Rita Boyden, Clare Senna, Margaret Gallo, Mary Giannino and her husband, John and the late John McComiskey;  the brother-in-law of Ellen McComiskey. He was the former husband of the late Laurie (Cahill); the nephew of John Hicks and good friend to John Toomey. He is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and beloved friends.

Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Gorsuch

Homemaker

Elizabeth M. “Betty” (Fitzpatrick) Gorsuch, a 33 year resident of Malden and former longtime resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Monday, June 16 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a long illness. She was 81 years old.

Betty was born in Boston on October 27, 1932, a daughter of the late Edward J. Fitzpatrick and Helen (Manning) Fitzpatrick. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated in the Boston Public School system. Betty was a homemaker most of her adult life and took pride in caring for her husband and daughter.

Betty was the beloved wife of 64 years to Thomas O. Gorsuch; the devoted mother of Sheila Gorsuch Sillari of Malden; the loving Nana to Charles Sillari Jr. and his wife, Laurie of Wakefield and Lindsay Blumsack and her husband, Brian of Stoneham and her great-grandchildren: Charlie, Sofia, Matthew Sillari and Robby Blumsack. She was the beloved sister of Marion Hughes, Ann Fitzpatrick, Robert Fitzpatrick, Joseph Fitzpatrick and the late Helen Geno, Dorothy Pratt, Edward, William, John, Warren, Paul, Gerald and Francis Fitzpatrick. She was the loving Godmother to Charles Pratt of Charlestown and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Betty’s Funeral on Saturday, June 21 at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St., Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St., Charlestown at 10 a.m. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours are Friday, June 20 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Carl Zellner

Carl Zellner passed away Sunday June 29th at Cape Cod Hospital.

As a local historian Carl was a dedicated and great friend of Charlestown. Carl Zellner

Retired Boston City Planner; helped design Big Dig and Boston roads and parks;avid Boston historian

Carl A. Zellner, a former longtime resident of Boston and Charlestown, passed away June 29 at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis with his family at his side. He was 78 years old.
Carl was born October 4, 1935 to Gladys and August Zellner in Oklahoma City, OK. There he graduated Classen High School and his further education included: Principia College, BA degree, University of Washington, MA degree and his doctoral work at Harvard. Carl’s career as a city planner spanned many decades and impacted the layout of many cities, towns, and highways. He also spent a few years in the US Coast Guard, active duty in Alaska before joining the USCG Reserves where he rose to the rank of Captain, O6 before retiring.

Carl, who was a retired city planner for the City of Boston, was in part responsible for design of the Big Dig and many roads and parks in the city. He had been retired and living in Palmyra, VA with his current wife, Virginia Foster for the past 10 years.

As an avid Boston historian, he had been doing research on a variety of subjects, followed by a visit to his daughter in Wellfleet at the time of his passing. 
He was preceded in death by his first wife Beverly (1934 to 1996.) His legacy: son, Charles Zellner and his wife, Susan of Lehighton, PA., Carla Smith and her husband, Jeff of Wellfleet, MA., Danielle Cahill and her husband, Bill of Nashville, TN. His legacy of grandchildren includes: Matthew Zellner, Mark Zellner, Nicole Zellner, Amber Wirth, Beverley Cahill, and Marina Smith; great grandchildren: Gabriel, Aubrey and Hannah Wirth, and Gloria Zellner. Carl is also survived by his cousin Merrilee Zellner of Newport, RI.
A memorial service and celebration of Carl’s life will be held at the Bunker Hill Museum on September 7. Call for details. Donations in his memory can be made to Charlestown Historical Society, PO Box 291776, Charlestown, MA 02129.

Fun fact: Carl, due to his research and love of Charlestown history, was responsible for a historical marker noting the landing site of Paul Revere’s boat being moved to its current and correct location.

Helen Paz

Worked at Schraffs Candy Company in Charlestown Until Its Closing

Helen F. Paz, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Friday, October 17 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. She was 71 years old.

Helen was born in Somerville on September 6, 1943, a daughter of the late Faustino Paz and Ethel I. (Kenney) Paz. She grew up in Charlestown and she was educated in the Boston Public School system. Helen worked for over 30 years as a packer for Schraffts Candy Company in Charlestown until the company closed. Helen enjoyed her family and was most appreciative along with her siblings to her niece Judy Cleveland and great-niece J.C. Young for the love and care they showed Helen for many years.

Helen was the devoted sister of Charles “Chuck” Paz, Mary “Sissy” Cleveland, Gloria Chapman, Shirley Morani, Judy Shanahan, Doris Pucillo, Millie Hawley, John Paz and the late Lillian Paz and the dear aunt to many loving nieces and nephews.

Helen’s Funeral Services and burial will be private.

Ryan J. Morrissey

Ryan J. “Duce” Morrissey, passed away tragically at Massachusetts General Hospital on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at the young age of 17.

Ryan was born in Boston on July 20, 1997, a son of Stephen G. Morrissey and Carol A. (Powers) Morrissey. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system, and was currently a senior at St. Clement’s High School, a member of the Class of 2015 and also a member of St. Joseph’s Prep hockey team. He worked as a Junior Counselor at the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club, and was a member of Charlestown Youth Hockey.

Ryan is the adored and loving son of Stephen G. Morrissey and Carol A. “Sis” (Powers) Morrissey. He is the devoted brother to Craig Powers and Michaela Morrissey. He is the loving uncle to Brayden, Craig Ryan, and Seamus. He is the beloved Grandson of Mary J. Morrissey and the late Joseph M. Morrissey, and also Carol Powers and Francis Powers. He is lovingly survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Rev. Msgr. Robert J. Boyle

 A funeral Mass was held on Friday, November 14 at St. Charles Church in Woburn for Msgr. Robert J. Boyle.  A retired priest of the Archdiocese and living at Regina Cleri in the West End of Boston, he was 88 and died on Nov. 10.

Msgr. Boyle grew up in Woburn, the son of the late Attorney Edmund and Sara A. (Quinn) Boyle.  He came from a family of three boys.  He attended St. Charles Grammar School, Woburn High School, class of 1943 and Boston College, class of 1947.  He was ordained on April 11, 1951 by Archbishop Cushing.  He celebrated his first Mass at St. Charles Church in Woburn.

 From 1974 to 1984, he was pastor of St. Mary Parish in Charlestown.  He was later pastor of Star of the Sea Parish in Quincy (1984-1989) and St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Acton (1989-1997).

He is survived by a brother, Gerard F. Boyle and several nieces and nephews.  He was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Woburn.

Joseph Noe

Retiree of the City of Boston Maintenance Division

Joseph Noe, a 50 year resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Friday, November 14 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford following an extended illness. He was 85 years old.

Joseph was born in Boston on April 26, 1929, a son of the late Ralph Noe and Jeannette (Drafone) Noe. He grew up in the West End of Boston and was educated in the Boston Public School system. Joe worked in the Maintenance Division for the City of Boston for over 30 years. He enjoyed traveling to Foxwoods.

Joseph was the devoted longtime companion of Barbara Lewis of Charlestown; the beloved brother of Betty Tedder of Saugus, Martin Olsen of Quincy and the late Angelina LaFountain, Shirley Uhre and Ralph Noe. He was the loving uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. Burial was private. In lieu of flowers, kindly make a memorial donation in Joe’s name to a charity of your choice.

Eugene F. “Buddy” Whelan

Of Charlestown

Eugene F. “Buddy” Whelan, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following an extended illness. He was 80 years old.

Buddy was born in Boston on December 31, 1933, a son of the late Thomas Whelan and Brigid D. (Killoran) Whelan. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system. He enlisted into the United States Air Force on February 28, 1952 and served his country with pride and courage during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on February 27, 1956 with the rank of Airman First Class. Buddy furthered his education and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Boston State College. Buddy worked for Boston Edison Company for over 35 years and retired as a Supervisor in 1995. He was a member of the Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus, Bunker Hill Associates, Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, Bunker Hill American Legion Post # 26, V.F.W. Post # 544 and lifetime member of Disabled American Veterans. Buddy enjoyed the quality time he was able to spend with his family and the time spent at his summer home in Pocasset. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching all the Boston sports teams.

Buddy is the beloved husband of 55 years to Kathleen M. “Kitty” (Farren) Whelan. He is the devoted father of Jacqueline Chaisson and her husband Stephen of Charlestown and David Whelan and his wife Maryhelen of Charlestown. He is the loving Pup to Bridgette Ridlon and her husband Eric, JeanMarie Chaisson, Michael Chaisson and his great-grandson Jack Ridlon. He is the brother of the late Catherine Hansen, Sr. Thomas Brigid Whelan OP, Peg Malloy, Thomas and Joseph Whelan. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Mary Heffernan Goodrich

Lifelong Homemaker

Mary R. ‘Fifi’ Heffernan Cunneen Goodrich of Mechanic Falls, Maine died Monday, December 22 at her home. She was 70 years old.

She was born in Boston on September 26, 1944, the daughter of George Michael and Mary Rita McLaughlin Heffernan. She married Myron Goodrich on September 17, 1983 and has been a homemaker all of her life.

She is survived by her husband of Mechanic Falls, Maine; her sons, William Cunneen of Oxford, Maine, Michael Cunneen, Thomas Cunneen and James Goodrich and his fiancée, Cassandra Bonney all of Mechanic Falls, Maine; her daughters, Pauline Ayers and her husband, Brian of Mechanic Falls, Maine, Kimberly Pelletier and her husband, Stuart of Hebron, Maine and Michele Comeau and her husband, Ed of Mechanic Falls, Maine; 11 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Kathleen Heffernan, Rose King and Margaret Gorrill, all of Charlestown. She was predeceased by a sister, Georgina Lenzi; and two grandsons, Joshua Leonard and Dakota Cunneen.
