Jan McGinn

Daughter of late  Chelsea Soldiers Home Commandant

Jan (Quigley) McGinn of Concord, formerly of Chelsea and Charlestown, died on, December 30.

She was the daughter of the late Commandant of the Chelsea Soldiers Home, John L. Quigley and his wife, Jean; wife of Paul O. McGinn; mother of Matthew R. and Benjamin L.; sister of John L. Quigley, Jr. and his wife, Sheila of Barrington, RI and Kristen Quigley Coe and her husband, Mark of River Forest, IL; daughter-in-law of John J. McGinn Jr. of Peabody and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held Friday, January 4 from the Dee Funeral Home, 27 Bedford Street, Concord Center  at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in Holy Family Parish, Monument Square, Concord Center, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Concord. Visiting hours will be at the Funeral Home, today, Thursday, January 3, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Newton Country Day School of the Sacred Heart – Newton Scholar’s Program, 785 Centre St., Newton, MA 02458. Capt. John ‘Jack’ Rooney

USAF (Retired)

Capt, John T. “Jack” Rooney, USAF (Retired) of Centerville entered into rest on Monday, December 10. He was 77 years old.

“Jack” was born on March 11, 1935 in Charlestown, to the late John T. Rooney and Teresa Collins Pollack.  He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps for four years and went on to join the United States Air Force from which he retired as Captain in Warner Robins.  He was of the Catholic faith.

In addition to his parents, his beloved stepfather who raised him, Philip Pollack, preceded him in death.

His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife, Sharon Odom Rooney of Centerville; sons, John Rooney of Atlanta, Georgia and Paul Mercer (Jessica) of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Stephanie Rooney, Arlington, Virginia, and Brennan and Brandon Mercer, both of Warner Robins; siblings, Robert Rooney, Charlestown, Massachusetts, Philip Pollack (Rosa), Sugarland, Texas, Eleanor Santosuosso, Charlestown and William Pollack, Stoneham and his brothers-in-law, Charles Odom, Warner Robins and Stan Odom (Annquinette), Eatonton, Georgia.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 11 in Andersonville National Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests donations be made to the COPD Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave, Suite 302, Miami, FL, 33133.

Rita Murphy

Retired First National Stores Secretary

Rita M. Murphy of Winthrop passed away at the Chelsea Jewish Nursing Home on January 4. She was 99 years old.

Prior to her retirement, she was employed at First National Stores as a secretary.

Born in Charlestown, she was the beloved daughter of the late William and Agnes (Gallagher) Murphy; loving sister of the late Mae Selvitelli, Helene, Teresa, Joseph, Veronica and Francis Murphy; dear aunt of William and Marie Murphy of Novi, MI, David and Deborah Murphy of West Palm Beach FL, Janet McLaughlin and Paula and John Lombardi of Franklin, Robert and Patricia Selvitelli of Sutton, Richard Murphy of Winthrop, Barbara and William McNeil of Milton, Kathleen and George Moynihan of West Newbury and the late William Selvitelli.

Funeral arrangements were by the Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home, Winthrop. A Funeral Mass was held in St. John the Evangelist Church, Winthrop on January 9. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford. Edward T. and Eleanor M. McFarland

Memorial Funeral Mass on Saturday

Edward T. McFarland of Revere died after a long illness at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose on July 23, 2012. His dear wife of 69 years, Eleanor M. (Valiante) McFarland, also of Revere and also a resident of Annemark Nursing Home in Revere, where they both had been living (she was unaware of his passing) died at Annemark Nursing Home on November 23, 2012, exactly four months later, peacefully and quietly.

Mr. McFarland was born in Framingham, raised in Charlestown and attended Charlestown Schools. Most of his working career was spent as a policeman with the former Boston and Maine (B&M Railroad) for more than 45 years. He also worked as a maintenance supervisor for the MBTA until retiring in 1985.

Mrs. McFarland was born in Boston, raised in Somerville and was a graduate of Somerville High School, Class of 1940. For many years, she worked for the Somerville Hospital as a Patients’ Advocate and Adjucator. She was a long time member of the Guild at the Italian Home for Children in Jamaica Plain.

Mr. and Mrs. McFarland lived in Somerville for most of their lives until coming to Revere 15 years ago in 1998.

They were the beloved and devoted parents of Lorna M. McFarland of Hudson, Florida and Lynne M. McFarland-Robison and her husband, David V. Robison of Revere; the cherished grandparents of Edward M. Piscopo of Manchester, NH, David M. Piscopo and his wife, Priscilla of Salem, NH and the dear great grandparents of Brittany D. and Miranda L. Piscopo of Manchester, NH and Jessica L. and Angela Piscopo of Salem, NH. Mrs. McFarland was the dear sister of Constance Rando of Wilmington. Mr. McFarland was the brother of the late Henry McFarland and Margaret Bartera. They are also lovingly survived by several nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Family and friends are invited to attend their Memorial Funeral Mass on Saturday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church (corner of Beach Street and Winthrop Avenue) Revere followed by entombment at Woodlawn Cemetery Chapel Building in the Narcissus Room. John Brophy

Of Hull, formerly of Charlestown

John J. Brophy of Hull, formerly of Charlestown, passed away peacefully on January 12.

He was the husband of the late Loretta Y.(Gravell) Brophy; father of Yvette DiFrummolo and her husband, Robert of Charlestown, Denise Mallozzi and her husband, Jim of Plymouth, Renee Bornheim and her husband, Kurt of Hull, and the late John J. Brophy, Jr. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Robert DiFrummolo, Jr and his wife, Jodi, Janelle Yildizyan and her husband, Alex, Justin DiFrummolo, Louis and Christopher Mallozzi, and great grandchildren: Chloe, Evan , Arianna, Liam and Isabella.

His Funeral Mass will be held in St. Ann’s Church, Samoset Avenue and Lewis Street, Hull on Saturday, February 2 at 11 a.m. Burial will be private and calling hours are omitted. Michael Leo Kinsella, Jr., LTC, Decorated Veteran of New Hampshire, formerly of Chelsea, Charlestown and

Winthrop.

Michael Leo Kinsella, Jr. died in Manchester, NH at the VA Medical Center on Jan 14 surrounded by his loving family. He was 69 years old.

Born in Charlestown on September 17, 1943, the eldest son of the late Michael Leo and Eileen (Murphy) Kinsella, he graduated from Boston College High School and Boston College. He later graduated from the US Army Command and General Staff College. ‘Mike’ proudly served his country in Viet Nam for three tours of duty where he was awarded two Bronze Stars. After leaving active duty, he served in the Massachusetts National Guard, retiring in 2003 as Lieutenant Colonel. ‘Mike’ was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Medical Assistance until his retirement in 2003.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Janice (Malinowski); two daughters, Leigh Ann Kinsella of Windham, NH and Dana V. Kinsella of Danvers. He is also survived by his sister, Sheila K. Wander and her husband, Philip of New York and his brother, Kevin T. Kinsella and his wife, Nancy of Winthrop and by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was interred at the New Hampshire Veterans’ Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.

Frank Ward

(September 17, 1952 – January 11, 2013)

Fort Mill SC – Mr. Francis “Frank” Xavier Ward, Jr., 60 of 105 Jackson Street, died Friday, January 11, 2013, at Agape Senior Rehabilitation Center.

Memorial services were held at Fort Mill Church of God. A native of Charlestown, MA, Mr. Ward was a son of Josephine McLaughlin Ward and the late Francis Xavier Ward, Sr.

Surviving in addition to his mother is his wife, Jane Mary Albertina Ward, one son, Anthony Ward; two daughters, Kristina Ward and Emily Becerril; two brothers, John Ward and Danny Ward; two sisters, Kathy Getchell and Maureen Puglielli and two grandchildren, Annabell Becerril and Jasmine Becerril.

Kathleen ‘Kay’ Doherty

Of Charlestown

Kathleen F. “Kay” Doherty of Charlestown died on February 7.

She was the devoted daughter of the late Mary (Burns) and Bernard Doherty; beloved sister of Joanne Doherty of Charlestown, Danny Doherty and his wife, Lilly of Saugus and the late Bernard, Tommy, and Johnny Doherty. She was also the sister of Nancy Ryan of Reedville, Mary Deery and Peggy Gillis of East Dennis, Barbara Hunter of New Hampshire, Hugh Doherty of Saugus and Roger Doherty of Charlestown. She was the cherished aunt of Lili Maltais, Katie Swales, Dano Doherty, Jacqueline Doherty and also leaves many more nieces and nephews and the dear friend of Sidney McComiskey of Charlestown.

Margaret ‘Penny’ Arroyo

Margaret E. “Penny” (Reid) Arroyo, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on December 31at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. She was 65 years old.

Margaret was born in Boston on February 19, 1947, a daughter of the late Arthur Reid and Tillie A. (Comeau) Reid. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended the Boston Public School system. Margaret was a homemaker who dedicated herself to bringing up her children.

She was the devoted mother of Federico Arroyo and Patricia of Charlestown, Martina Arroyo and Patty of Charlestown, Louis Arroyo of Pennsylvania, Sonjia Arroyo of Lee, Fernando Arroyo and Katie of Charlestown, Dedeira Arroyo and Ky of Belmont, Artania Leonard and Michael of Charlestown and Anthony Bolger of Charlestown; the loving Nana Penny to 24 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren and the beloved sister of Arthur Reid, Susan Durgin, Suzanne Mullen, Thomas Reid, Edward Reid, Sandra Ortiz, Michael Reid and the late Linda Alvarado. Mary Walsh

Past President of Bunker Hill Conway Post American Legion Ladies Auxiliary

Mary B. (Gunning) Walsh, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on January 7 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after an extended illness. She was 91 years old.

Mary was born in Boston on January 15, 1921, a daughter of the late John J. Gunning and Margaret F. (Harte) Gunning. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School. Mary was a dedicated and devoted homemaker and spent all of her adult life caring for her husband and seven children. She was a devoted communicant at St. Francis De Sales Church in Charlestown and a big supporter of Catholic Television. She was past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Bunker Hill, James W. Conway American Legion Post # 26 of Charlestown.

She was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. Walsh; the devoted mother of Michael J. Walsh Jr. and his wife, Christine of Middleboro, Margaret Walsh and her husband, Jack of Cambridge, Kevin J. Walsh and his wife, Paula of Sandwich, John P. Walsh and his wife Donna of Foxboro, James F. Walsh and his wife, Kathleen of Charlestown, Thomas W. Walsh and his wife, Debra of Lincoln and Mary Walsh-Gordon and her husband, Michael of Dedham; the beloved Nana to 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and the beloved sister of Frederick Gunning of Charlestown, Margaret Murphy of Medford and the late John, Thomas, James and Francis Gunning. Patrick Tracy

Patrick M. Tracy, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life unexpectedly on December 31. He was 52 years old.

Born in Boston on May 7, 1960, a son of Mary L. (DeLacy) Tracy and the late Richard C. Tracy, he grew up in Charlestown where he attended the Boston Public School system. ‘Pat’ worked as a carpenter for many years.

He was the devoted father of Michelle Elwell of Lowell and Megan Elwell of Malden; the beloved son of Mary L. (DeLacy) Tracy of Charlestown and the late Richard C. Tracy; the loving Grandpa to Jayden, Madelynne and Clancy and the beloved brother of Kathryn Walsh and her late husband, John of Revere, Marylou Tracy of Charlestown and the late Christopher Tracy. He was the loving uncle of Katie and Mike Mason, Johnny Walsh, Christa Day, Skyla Tracy and Rayven.

Annmarie McLaughlin

Of Florida, formerly of Charlestown

Annmarie T. (McInnis) McLaughlin, an eight year resident of Pompano Beach, Florida, formerly of Charlestown, Everett and Derry, New Hampshire, passed into eternal life unexpectedly on January 13 at Broward Health North Hospital in Deerfield Beach, Florida. She was 69 years old.

Annmarie was born in Boston on September 19, 1943, a daughter of the late Joseph McInnis and Helen (Gallivan) McInnis. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended the Boston Public School system. She was a dedicated homemaker who took pride in caring for her husband and children and the upkeep of her home. Annmarie loved  travel and listening to Irish music and was very involved with her shuffleboard teams in Everett and in Pompano Beach, Florida.

She was the cherished wife of 52 years to Patrick J. McLaughlin; the devoted mother of Patrick J. McLaughlin Jr. and his wife, Sabrina of Saugus, Sharon Fiorentino and her husband, John of Litchfield, New Hampshire and Shaun McLaughlin and his wife, Tammy of Litchfield, New Hampshire;  the loving Nana to Patrick J. III, Bernadine, John IV, Nicholas, Dominique, Jennifer and Shaun Jr.;  the beloved sister of Jackie McInnis of Maryland, Michael McInnis of Malden, Helen Schaar of Barnstable, Kathleen Murphy of Derry, New Hampshire, Susan Matarazzo of Charlestown and the late Joseph McInnis. Eleanor Ridings

Member of Old Charlestown Schoolgirls Association

Eleanor M. (Nover) Ridings, a long time resident of Charlestown and former resident of Somerville for over 50 years, passed into eternal life on January 21, at her home in Charlestown. She was 82 years old.

Born in Boston on June 25, 1930, a daughter of the late Otto Nover and Grace (Brennan) Nover, she grew up in Charlestown where she attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1948.

She was a dedicated homemaker while caring for her husband and four sons while living in Somerville. She was an active parishoner at St. Benedicts Parish in Somerville before moving back to Charlestown. Eleanor was a member of the Old Charlestown Schoolgirls Association and her favorite past time was listening to opera.

She was the beloved wife of the late John P. Ridings; the devoted mother of John P. Ridings Jr. and his fiancé, Rose Messina of North Reading, Ronald Ridings of Boston, Robert Ridings and his wife, Pamela of Fitchburg and William Ridings and his wife Maureen of Scituate; the loving Nana to Christopher, Jason, Christine, Jenna, Eric, Michelle, Brittany and her great-grandchildren; Chason and Cassidy and the beloved sister of the late Joseph Nover and Dorothy Rea.

Retired Home Health Aide of Burlington, formerly of Charlestown

Mary B. (Flaherty) Junta, a six year resident of Burlington and a former longtime resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life on February 1 at her home in Burlington following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 82 years old.

Mary was born in Boston on October 30, 1930, a daughter of the late John J. Flaherty and Barbara (Durrane) Flaherty. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended the Boston Public School system. Mary worked for over 20 years as a Home Health Aide for the Visiting Nurse Association in Cambridge. She enjoyed reading and most of all she dedicated her adult life to the love and caring of her 12 children.

She was the devoted and loving mother of Barbara Tracy and her husband, Arthur, Mary Ellen Brown and her husband, Richard, John Junta and his wife, Susan, Agnes Junta-White, Thomas Junta, Ann Kelly and her husband, Bernie, James Junta, Michael Junta, Theresa Lawton, Paul Junta and his wife, Sheila, Daniel Junta and his wife, Caroline and Patrick Junta and his wife, Caroline. She was the loving grandmother to 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and  the beloved sister of the late Florence Salvato and Anne Flaherty.

Shaina M. Coleman, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life unexpectedly on February 5 at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence. She was 30 years old.

Shaina was born in Boston on March 22, 1982, a daughter of Joanne (Libby) Coleman and Stephen Coleman. She grew up in Charlestown where she attended the Boston Public School system. Shaina was a homemaker who dedicated her young adult life to the caring of her four sons.

She was the beloved wife of Edinson Suazo;  the loving mother of Riley Tejeda, Reardon, Edinson and Stephen Suazo; the devoted daughter of Joanne (Libby) Coleman and Stephen Coleman; beloved grandaughter of William “Matches” McGrath and the late Patricia McGrath and the late Stephen and Pauline Coleman; the loving niece of Shawna and Thomas McGrath and is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.

Shaina Coleman

Shaina M. Coleman, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, passed into eternal life unexpectedly on February 5 at Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence. She was 30 years old.

Richard O’Connor

Worked in law Enforcement

Richard F. “Dick” O’Connor (Retired Special Agent and Supervisor, Drug Enforcement Agency and former Detective, Boston Police Department) a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered eternal life unexpectedly on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 86 years old.

Dick was born in Boston on November 29, 1926, a son of the late Patrick H. O’Connor and Cecilia (Flavin) O’Connor. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from Charlestown High School. He enlisted into the United States Navy on December 6, 1944 and served his country with honor and pride during World War II. He was discharged honorably on June 23, 1946 with the rank of Seaman First Class. After his military sevice, Dick worked as a longshoreman on the Boston waterfront and was a member Local # 799 I.L.A. Dick joined the Boston Police Department where he was a patrolman from 1950 to 1959 and later was promoted to detective. In 1965 Dick became employed by the Federal Government in the Treasury Department and later transferred to the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, ultimately retiring as the head of the New England Organized Crime Task Force. Upon retiring he became the Director of Public Safety at The Bunker Hill Community College. Dick was a proud member of The Old Charlestown Schoolboy’s Association and a lifelong active member of St. Mary’s Parish in Charlestown.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Dick’s Funeral on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 9:00 A.M. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10:30 A.M. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours Friday, March 1, 2013 from 4 to 8 P.M. in the funeral home.

Frances (Tempesta) Mastrocola of Everett died on March 2 at the Meadow Green Nursing Home, Waltham. She was 95 years old.

Born in Boston and a longtime resident of Everett, she was a retired Comptroller for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

She was the beloved wife of the late Vincent J. Mastrocola; dear and devoted mother of Peter J. Masters and his wife, Karolyn of Bedford, Janice Mastrocola of Charlestown and James Mastrocola and his wife, Angela of Texas; sister of Connie Capelli of Florida, Maria Mirabella of Tewksbury and the late Gaetano, Vito Tempesta and Nicoletta Parlatore.  She is also survived by seven loving grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral Mass in St. Anthony’s Church, 38 Oakes St., Everett, at 10 a.m.   Friday, March 8. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Arthur Crotty

Among The Original Founders of the Townie Santa Charity

Arthur F. Crotty of Texas, a long time resident of Charlestown, passed away peacefully on February 23. He was 78 years old.

Born and raised in Charlestown, he lived here for 66 years before retiring to Texas. He was an active union member of the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA) for which he worked for 44 years. He was one of the original founders of the Townie Santa charity that delivered much needed items and food to the elderly and shut-ins at Christmas. He was a great son, brother, husband, dad and person – he will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

The devoted husband of 54 years of Margaret (Docherty) Crotty, he was the father of Arthur Crotty and wife, Joan of Reading, David Crotty and wife, Donna of Texas, Ken Crotty and wife, Mary of Winchester; Ellen Crotty and husband, Edward Pistorino of Charlestown and the late Stephen Crotty and William (Billy) Crotty of Charlestown; beloved brother of Ellen Quinn of Canton, Ann Joyce of Milton and the late Sister Mary David. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren who loved him dearly and always enjoyed listening to his stories.

A special Mass will be held for family and friends on Saturday, March 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Charlestown. Burial services will be held privately at a future date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Charlestown Boys and Girls Club.

Christopher Bradshaw

Member of Boston Sparks Association and British Institute of Embalmers

Christopher C. Bradshaw, a Charlestown resident for more than 20 years, formerly of Cranston RI, died suddenly on March 5. He was 45 years old.

A member of the Boston Sparks Association and the British Institute of Embalmers, he was a graduate of the New England Institute of Applied Arts & Sciences. He worked for more than 20 years as one of the most skilled and caring Trade Embalmers and Registered Funeral Director and he was a late employee of The Dodge Company.

He was the beloved son of Robert G. “Bud” and his late wife, Ellen-Ann (Wayss) Bradshaw of Cranston, R.I. and the loving husband of Ruth (DeGeorge) Bradshaw to whom he was married  for over  15 years; devoted brother of Roberta  Zimmerly and her husband, Jim of Cranston R.I. and the awesome and cherished uncle of Christopher and Grace Zimmerly. He is also survived by aunts, uncle, and many cousins

Clara Mahoney

Former Supervisor/Manager of

Bunker Hill Health Center

Clara M. (DiIanni) Mahoney, a 56 year resident of Charlestown, entered eternal life on Saturday, March 16 at her Charlestown home following an extended illness. She was 79 years old.

Clara was born in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, on April 9, 1933, a daughter of the late Lorenzo DiIanni and Francesca (Giampaolo) DiIanni. She grew up in McKees Rocks where she attended schools and graduated high school. She moved to the Boston area more than 56 years ago after meeting her then future husband, John at Revere Beach.

Clara worked at the Bunker Hill Health Center in Charlestown for over 34 years as a Supervisor/Manager and took great pride in helping the many people who required medical attention at the facility. She enjoyed visiting Foxwoods once a month with her friends, but most of all she enjoyed quality time with her husband, children and grandchildren.

She was the beloved wife of 56 years to Retired Boston Police Officer John F. Mahoney;  the devoted mother of Patricia Marshall and her husband, David of West Roxbury, AnneMarie Hasanen and her husband, Pertti of Charlestown, Elaine “Lainie” Sheehan and her husband, Kieran, Eileen Mahoney and John Mahoney, all of Charlestown and Thomas Mahoney and his wife, Patricia of Braintree. She was the loving Nana to 11 grandchildren, the beloved sister of two sisters and two brothers and is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Longtime Charlestown Resident

Margaret M. (Doherty) Martell, a longtime resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on March 12 at the Marian Manor Nursing Home in South Boston following an extended illness. She was 84 years old.

Margaret was born in Belfast, Ireland on November 22, 1928, a daughter of the late John Doherty and Catherine (McBrearly) Doherty. She grew up in Chelsea and attended St. Rose Parochial School and graduated from St. Rose High School in Chelsea. She was a switchboard operator for New England Telephone Company for several years and also worked for Dupont Company in Boston. She enjoyed playing bingo, going to yard sales and most of all spending quality time with her family.

Florence M. (Heidelman) MacDonald, a 50 year resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life unexpectedly on March 11 at her home in Charlestown. She was 87 years old.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York on April 8, 1925, a daughter of the late William Heidelman and Sofie (Merz) Heidelman. She grew up in Ridgewood, New York where she attended schools and graduated high school. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, baking, sewing, gardening and traveling to Falmouth.

Filenes Retiree

Anna L. (Losco) O’Donnell died at Oosterman’s Rest Home of Wakefield following a long illness. She was 93 years old.

Born and raised in Revere, she attended Revere Schools and was a lifelong Revere resident until moving to Melrose for about 15 years. She retired from Filene’s of Boston after a 27 year career in sales and was a member of the Filene’s Quarter Century Club, St. Anthony’s Ladies’ Sodality, the Revere Smart Set and the Revere Patriot Club.

She was the wife of the late Paul T. O’Donnell who died in July of 1970; the cherished mother of Kathleen A. Milligan and her husband, Dr. Richard J. Milligan, DDM of Revere and Attorney Paul R. O’Donnell and his wife, Ann B. of Reading; the devoted grandmother of Karen M. Milligan-Frost and her husband, Matthew Frost of Arlington, Paul W. O’Donnell of Reading, Erin A. Thomas ‘Benny’ Sexton

A Townie, Never Forgot Where He Came From

Thomas R. “Benny” Sexton, a 40 year resident of Melrose and formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, March 27 at The Chelsea Soldiers Home in Chelsea after an extended illness. He was 77 years old.

Tom was born in Charlestown on March 14, 1936, a son of the late John L. Sexton and Agnes (Cunha) Sexton. He grew up in Charlestown where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1954. Tom was a true Townie and never forgot where he came from. He enjoyed attending the Charlestown Boys Club and playing softball down the oily. He enlisted in the US Army on October 7, 1954 and served his country with dignity and pride during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on July 25, 1956 with the rank of Corporal.

Tom worked as an electrician for many years before his illness and was a member of The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, I.B.E.W. Local # 103 for over 31 years. Tom was a member of the Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association, Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus, Light The Oily Committee and Bellevue Golf Club of Melrose. He enjoyed playing golf and making and repairing golf clubs, bowling, playing horseshoes and attending Patriots games. He also enjoyed his summer vacations in Marshfield for over 40 years.

He was the loving husband of 45 years to Mary M. (Babcock) Sexton; the devoted father of Thomas R. Sexton Jr. and his girlfriend, Jennifer Tozier of Ipswich and Kevin M. Sexton and his wife, Erin of Reading; the loving Papa to Madison Sexton; the beloved brother of Eileen Murphy and her husband, Paul of Cambridge, John Sexton and his wife, Lorraine of Everett and William Sexton and his wife, Carol of California; the beloved brother-in-law of Jean M. Longtime Employee of St. Catherine’s Church of Charlestown

Louise S. (Kelly) Fama, a longtime resident of Charlestown, passed away on April 6 at the Courtyard Nursing Care Center in Medford. She was 95 years old.

Prior to her retirement, she was a longtime employee of St. Catherine’s Church in Charlestown.

She was the devoted wife of the late Joseph F. Fama; beloved mother of Peggy Tassinari and her late husband, Anthony of Tewksbury and was predeceased by many brothers and sisters. She was the cherished grandmother of Paul and Cheryl Tassinari, both of Tewksbury and Michelle Repoza and her husband, Paul of Chelmsford and is also lovingly survived by her great grandchildren, Madison, AJ, Cassidy and Joshua.

Brenda Lee Argabright

Fixture in the Community

Brenda Lee Argabright passed away unexpectedly in April.

Brenda was a fixture in the community and was often seen walking a dog.  Brenda was distinctive in her appearance with her many tattoos.  She came to Boston, then Charlestown, sometimes around the early 1970’s.

She leaves her son, Brian of Quincy and was so proud that he had grown into such a fine young man.  She also leaves her father, Less and brother, Wayne, both of South Carolina, a brother, Stuart of New York and Smoky, the cat.  Her mother predeceased her.

Ralph Noe, Sr. of Everett, formerly of the West End of Boston, died on May 14.

Mr. Noe was a US Army Korean War veteran and a late member of the Teamsters Local #25. He was also the former owner of Noe’s Ice Cream Truck and Rita’s Food Fair at the Northeast Trade Center.

Former MDC Police Officer, Well Known Church Tenor

Edward F. Leahy of Charlestown, (born in Somerville and formerly of Hull, Weymouth, Braintree and  Port Orange, Florida) died on June 22.

Eddie was a former MDC Police Officer, Investigator for the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission, Government Affairs Representative for the Distilled Spirits Council of the U.S. and the Wine Institute of California.  He was also a well know tenor in many Boston and South Shore churches and a US Navy veteran of World War II South Pacific.
He was the beloved husband of Mary H. “Marie” (Maguire) Leahy; loving father of Sally A. Flanagan of Florida, Edward F. Jr. and his wife, Eileen of Connecticut, Robert M. and his wife, Lourdes of New York, Paul G. and his wife, Rose of Connecticut, Mark J. and his wife, Alicia of Pennsylvania, Peter C. and his wife, Kristine of Connecticut, Timothy D. and his wife, Maria of Charlestown and Thomas A. and his wife, Barbara Leahy of Pennsylvania. Anne Elaine Mc Ree of Millbrae passed away at her home on June 30. She was the loving wife of the late Nevel Mc Ree for over 47 years and is survived by her daughter, Gail Bagby, (the late Ron Bagby) and her son, Michael Mc Ree (his wife Mary Lynn); her grandchildren: Julie (husband, Michael Molloy), Jennifer (husband, Sam Suen), Sean, Ryan (his wife, Emily) and Colin; and great-grandchildren, Kylie, Brandon, Kaitlyn and Sarah. Elaine is also survived by two sisters, Marie Staffieri of Boston, MA and Patricia King of Holbrook, MA and their families.

She was a native of Boston, MA, age 86. She loved her family and many friends. Elaine enjoyed travel, parties, food and fun. She lived a full life and would never give up on anything.

She grew up in Charlestown and was loved by her entire family all of her life. She was a 35 year client of The Life Focus Center in Charlestown, enjoyed listening to music, dancing and loved all the Boston sports teams.

Edward Elwell

Lifelong Charlestown Resident;

 Worked for Sears & Roebuck

Edward J. Elwell, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Monday, August 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following an extended illness. He was 76 years old.

Ed was born on Boston on January 19, 1937, a son of the late James H. Elwell and Josephine A. (McMillan) Elwell. He grew up in Charlestown and he was educated in the Boston Public School system. Ed enlisted into the US Navy on August 8, 1955 and served his country with pride and honor during the Korean Conflict. He was discharged on August 14, 1957 with the rank of Machinist Mate Third Class. Ed worked for Sears & Roebuck Company as a warehouseman and was a member of Teamsters Union Local # 25 for over 45 years. He was a member of Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus and was a longtime friend of Bill W. He was a season ticket holder for the Boston Red Sox and took great enjoyment spending quality time with his family and especially his five grandchildren.

Ed is the beloved and loving husband of 51 years to Ann M. (Power) Elwell; the devoted father of Edward G. Elwell and his wife, Patricia, Michael P. Elwell, Dennis P. Elwell and the late Stephen J. Richard “Cheech” Francis Whalen, husband of the late Angela (Scalo) Whalen, died, surrounded by his children, on August 22 at Sherrill House, Jamaica Plain, after a long illness.

Born in Meriden, CT on May 19, 1931, he was the son of the late Lawrence W. Whalen, Sr. and Caroline (Barrette) Whalen.  He graduated from Meriden High School in 1949.  Mr. Whalen owned the North End Cafe on North Colony Street in Meriden, CT, with Fernand Roy, for over 50y years; retiring in 2007.

Cheech had many friends and was known for his kind and generous heart.  He will be greatly missed by all he embraced throughout his life.  He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War, a past parishioner of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Waterbury, CT, and St. Francis de Sales Parish in Charlestown,.  He was a member of the V.F.W., the Eagles Club, Hallmere Social Club, North Italian Social Club and the American Legion No. 45.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan M. Whalen and her husband, James S. Labeck of Charlestown; one son, Richard A. Whalen and his wife, Carla L. Whalen of Melrose; two grandchildren, Cameron and Christian Labeck; two sisters, Margaret R. Allison and her husband, Jonathan Allison of North Yorkshire, England, and Mary W. Dobson and her husband, Frederick Dobson III of Vancouver, Washington and sisters-in-law, Georgette P. Carosella and Barbara Whalen.  He is also survived by seven nieces and nine nephews and was predeceased by brothers Lawrence W. Whalen, Jr. and his wife Margarita Whalen, and James J. Whalen.

A Month’s Mind Mass will be held on Sunday, September 15 at 9 a.m. at St. Francis de Sales Church, 303 Bunker Hill Street, Charlestown.  Arrangements were under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden, CT 06450. Jeanne Sweinimer

Charlestown Patriot Newspaper Employee

Jeanne M. (Whitehouse) Sweinimer, an 18 year resident of Everett, formerly of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on September 1 at The Golden Living Center in Melrose after a long illness. She was 62 years old.

Jeanne was born in Stoneham on November 27, 1950, a daughter of the late Roger Whitehouse and Gloria (Morris) Whitehouse. She grew up in Charlestown where she was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1968. Jeanne worked for many years as a receptionist/sale representative for the Charlestown Patriot Newspaper.

She was the beloved wife of 16 years to Allen H. Sweinimer; the loving mother to Brian Davis; devoted sister of Diana Melaugh, Kathy Whitehouse and the late William Whitehouse, Marilyn McMaster, Kevin Whitehouse and Patricia Burke. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Funeral arrangements were by The Carr Funeral Home, Charlestown. Burial was in the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne. Marguerite Randazza

Lifetime Charlestown Resident

Marguerite M. (Hartman) Randazza, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on September 8 at Beth Israel-Deaconess Hospital in Boston following an extended illness. She was 86 years old.

Marguerite was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 27, 1926, a daughter of the late William Hartman and Margaret (Breen) Hartman. She grew up in Charlestown and was educated in the Boston Public School system. Marguerite was a lifetime member of The Daughters of Isabella # 1, worked as a homemaker for Malden Intercity for several years and volunteered her time at the Little Flower Parochial School in Somerville as a foster grandmother for several years. She enjoyed arts and crafts and found her most enjoyment in life was spending the as much time as she could with her husband and family.

Marguerite was the beloved and adored wife of 68 years to Reggio “Randy” Randazza;  the devoted mother of James Randazza and his wife Mary of Lynn, Marlene Fitzpatrick and her husband, Joe of Exeter, New Hampshire, Joseph Randazza and his wife, Kimberly of Danvers, Penny Gentile and her husband, Jerry of Malden and the late Nancy, Marion, Paula and Theresa Randazza. She was the loving Nana to nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Marguerite’s Funeral on Friday, September 13, at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by her Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett. Visiting hours will be today, Thursday, September 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.

M. Esther Feeley

Of Everett, formerly of Charlestown

M. Esther Feeley of Everett, formerly of Charlestown, died on October 1.

She was the beloved daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Corcoran) Feeley; loving sister of the late Margaret Yahoodik and James Feeley and is survived by several nieces and nephews including her loving niece Mary Anne Cirino, James Feeley and Paul Yahoodik. She was also the loving longtime companion of the late Al Freker.
